Foreign experts: win-win cooperation between China and the United States is widely expected

release time:2023/11/11

Otton Solis Farias, a professor at the IE Business School in Spain and former special advisor to the President of Costa Rica, recently wrote in China Daily that a series of issues such as poverty, inequality, and global warming pose a threat to social stability, peaceful development, and human survival. It is crucial for China and the United States to work together to address these challenges.
China US cooperation is widely expected
The article points out that the combined gross domestic product (GDP) of the two major economies, China and the United States, accounts for over 40% of the global total. The technological achievements of both countries lead the pace of human development, and cultural trends are sought after by the world.
If China and the United States can bridge their differences, it will help promote trade, achieve faster growth, and better meet the demands of the people. At the same time, the world will no longer be dominated by zero sum games and Cold War thinking, but is expected to reach more agreements in areas such as climate change, global poverty reduction, financial cooperation, and foreign investment.
Unfortunately, many American politicians are keen on a zero sum game, viewing China's economic growth and technological progress as threats rather than opportunities. They seem to believe that if China develops rapidly, the United States will be weakened; If the United States does not import from China, American companies will develop better; If the United States does not open its market to China, this country with a population of over 1.4 billion and highly competitive in various parts of the world will experience an economic crisis.
The United States does not need to worry excessively
The article further analyzes that when wealth accumulation is based on conquering overseas territories, plundering wealth, and enslaving the people of other countries, the zero sum game is applicable, as it will determine which countries are far ahead and which are backward and beaten. When military power built on economic advantages triggers war, there is indeed reason to prevent other countries from achieving prosperity and strength. However, historically, China has never had the ambition to colonize Africa, the Americas, Oceania, and other regions of Asia. Therefore, the United States has no reason to worry about China moving towards prosperity and strength.
When European powers colonized and plundered other regions, China was the wealthiest country on Earth with an advanced fleet. However, China's voyages were only aimed at finding trade opportunities. In fact, instead of invading other countries, China has repeatedly become a victim of foreign aggression in modern history.
Today, China wants to promote trade through its own competitiveness and economic strength, and has never attempted to achieve its goals through military means. China does not want to become the ultimate judge of the world's police, democracy and human rights, and a regulator of trade routes. China has never dispatched a navy to supervise the maritime routes between Cuba and the United States, nor has it dispatched warships to the Mediterranean during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Therefore, using military concerns as a reason to hinder China's economic development is untenable.
In addition, in terms of social development, China is worth learning from the West. Over the past 40 years, China has lifted approximately 800 million people out of absolute poverty. If world stability and peace require large-scale poverty reduction, then China should be seen as an example rather than an opponent.
At the end of the article, it is emphasized that leaders of major powers who are influenced by zero sum games should change their thinking and seek win-win cooperation for humanity.
