release time:2024/3/25

Global Times reporter Fan Anqi, Global Times special correspondent Wu Ming, President of the Republic of Nauru, David Adion, paid a state visit to China from March 24th to 29th. Adion arrived in Beijing by plane at noon on the 24th, marking the first visit of the President of Nauru to China since the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nauru on January 24th this year. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated on the 22nd that China is willing to work with Nauru on this visit as an opportunity to consolidate political mutual trust, expand exchanges and cooperation in various fields, deepen people's friendship, and promote the continuous development of bilateral relations.
After the announcement of the visit of the President of Nauru by the Chinese side, several domestic media outlets including Taiwan United News Network and China Times News Network reported on the news. According to a report by United News Network, two days after the completion of local leadership elections in Taiwan earlier this year, Nauru announced on January 15th that it had "severed diplomatic ties" with the Taiwan authorities. On January 24th, China and Nauru signed a communiqu é on the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nauru, and immediately resumed ambassadorial level diplomatic relations. On the 22nd, Agence France Presse reported on the upcoming visit of the President of Nauru to China, stating that Nauru's decision is seen as a major victory for Beijing and a blow to Taiwan.
Chen Hong, Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Research Center at East China Normal University, told Global Times on the 24th that President Nauru's visit has both political and economic cooperation significance. On the one hand, after the resumption of diplomatic relations, the two countries need to go through a period of understanding to understand each other's demands and understanding of hot issues. The visit of President Nauru to China this time will lay a solid foundation for establishing political mutual trust between the two sides and provide a very good opportunity for further substantive cooperation in the future. On the other hand, the deepening cooperation between other Pacific island countries and China has brought tangible benefits to the local people and played a demonstrative role in China Nauru cooperation. After the resumption of diplomatic relations, the first visit of the President of Nauru to China reflects the strong desire of the Nauru side to further deepen and implement cooperation between the two countries as soon as possible.
Chen Hong believes that this visit by the President of Nauru to China also serves as a reminder to the few remaining "diplomatic countries" of Taiwan, hoping that they can ultimately withstand domestic and foreign interference and make the right choices.
