According to data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization, China ranks first in the world in multiple intellectual property indicators, including the number of patents, trademarks, designs, new plant variety applications, and effective geographical indications.

The number of international intellectual property applications submitted by China through the Global Intellectual Property Service System of the World Intellectual Property Organization also reflects this. China is the largest user of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system, submitting nearly 70000 applications in 2023.

China is also an important pole in the global innovation landscape, ranking 12th in the 2023 Global Innovation Index. In the field of green technology, China is an important contributor to global innovation in green and low-carbon technologies. From 2016 to 2022, Chinese patent holders obtained 178000 green and low-carbon technology invention patents, accounting for nearly 32% of the global total, and achieved rapid growth in patents in technologies such as hydrogen energy and energy storage.
