International Observation: Do not turn back, promote stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China US relations

release time:2024/11/27

The voting for the US presidential election has come to an end. The new US government's policy towards China is still brewing, and China's policy towards the US has been consistent. We have always adhered to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, and promoted stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China US relations. This is the experience of the 50 year development of China US relations, the enlightenment brought by major power conflicts in history, and the correct way for China and the United States to get along in the new era.

In 1972, Nixon said at the Great Hall of the People, "We meet here not because we share common beliefs, but because we have common interests and common hopes." China and the United States have moved from military confrontation and long-term isolation to peaceful coexistence, exchange and mutual learning, with mutual respect as a prerequisite and common interests as the foundation. History shows that China and the United States can benefit both if they work together and hurt both if they fight. China US cooperation is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples, and is also the common expectation of the international community.

The success of China and the United States is each other's opportunity. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 45 years ago, trade between China and the United States has increased by more than 200 times, with bilateral trade accounting for about one-fifth of the world's total. Over 70000 American companies have invested and started businesses in China. 90% of enterprises are profitable. Boeing aircraft dominate nearly half of the Chinese aviation market, while Starbucks China is expected to have 9000 stores by 2025. Apple phones, KFC fast food, and Coca Cola beverages have already entered millions of households in China. The 2023 US China Trade Commission report shows that US exports to China have created over one million job opportunities for the United States. Similarly, China's trade with the United States has shifted from traditional clothing and toys to household appliances and electronic products. Haier and Midea home appliances have been selling well in the United States for a long time, and Anke's innovative power bank is almost universally available in the United States. Black Myth Wukong, Peace Elite, Genshin Impact and other Chinese games are also widely praised by American players. Fact has proven that win-win cooperation between China and the United States is not only possible, but also necessary. This is the true narrative of China US relations over the past half century, and it is also a common goal that both sides should continue to strive for.

China US cooperation has effectively promoted global prosperity and development. As the largest developing and developed countries, as well as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, China and the United States bear significant responsibilities in global and regional hot topics such as economic recovery, response to climate change, and public health. The cooperation between China and the United States can produce an effect where 1+1 is greater than 2. From food security in East Timor to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, from global counter-terrorism after 9/11 to the 2008 financial crisis, from Paris Climate Change cooperation to joint efforts to combat drug crimes, China and the United States have carried out effective cooperation in a series of fields, achieving great things that benefit the world and receiving welcome and praise from the international community. In the face of a turbulent and intertwined world, the common interests of China and the United States have not decreased, but increased. Both sides need to have a broad mind, demonstrate the pattern of great powers, play the role of great powers, and provide more public goods for the world.

In recent years, some American politicians have revived their Cold War mentality, exaggerated ideological opposition towards China, and attempted to revive McCarthyism, reversing the course of history. From the 'primary competitor' to the 'most significant geopolitical challenge', and then to the 'looming threat', the erroneous perception of China within the United States is pushing Sino US relations into a dangerous situation. The United States has brazenly violated China's sovereignty, security, and development interests, intensified its armed forces in Taiwan, formed cliques to encircle China, continued to lengthen the sanctions list, fabricated false narratives of "democracy against authoritarianism", and evolved from a "small courtyard with high walls" to a "large courtyard with iron curtains". More and more innocent people have become victims of the lies of so-called "Chinese infiltration" and "Chinese spies". Chinese students have been arbitrarily harassed, interrogated, and even deported by US law enforcement agencies. Chinese scientists have been deprived of their research rights, closed down laboratories, and even committed suicide due to depression on unfounded charges.

Even Americans can't bear to see the retrograde actions of the United States. More than 200 American scholars and politicians have signed an open letter titled 'China is not an enemy of the United States', opposing the US government and Congress' policy of confrontation with China. The anti war organization "Pink Code" in the United States held up slogans such as "China is not our enemy" and "Stop hating Asians" during a congressional hearing, protesting against the portrayal of the "China threat". 177 Stanford University faculty members jointly oppose the 'China Action Plan'. The National Retail Federation is calling for a reduction or cancellation of tariffs on China, stating that American importers have been forced to pay an additional $136.5 billion in tariffs, and this cost has ultimately been transferred to the consumer end and passed on to consumers.

The United States engaging in factional confrontation is also unpopular internationally. In the era of globalization, countries have a vested interest. From the Pacific to the Atlantic, the vast majority of countries are aware of the saying 'elephants fight, grass suffers', unwilling to take sides between China and the United States, and unwilling to be tied to tanks fighting against China. In July 2020, scholars from 48 countries including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Russia, and Canada spontaneously held a global video conference titled "Any new Cold War targeting China goes against human interests", refuting the US government's radical words and actions towards China as a threat to world peace.

History is the best textbook. Whether in the past, present or future, China and the United States will coexist on Earth for a long time. This is a fact that no one can change. The Pacific Ocean is wide enough and the Earth is large enough to fully accommodate the individual and common development of China and the United States. Should China and the United States become partners and friends, following the path of stable, healthy, and sustainable development, or become enemies and opponents, turning back to confrontation and confrontation? We look forward to the new US government making the right choices that are responsible to history, the world, and the people.
