Chinese Ambassador to the United States: Long term peaceful coexistence between China and the United States is both a responsibility and a necessity

Washington, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng stated in a video speech at the Duke North Carolina China Leadership Summit on February 28 that the long-term peaceful coexistence of China and the United States on this planet is both a responsibility and a necessity.   We hope that the US and China will move towards each other, implement the important consensus reached during the phone call between the two heads of state, maintain communication, manage differences, expand cooperation, and promote stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China US relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.

Xie Feng emphasized that if the other party is treated as a competitor and engaged in vicious competition, it will only result in a loss for both China and the United States, and the world will suffer; If the two countries become partners and achieve mutual success, they can prosper together and benefit the world.

Xie Feng pointed out that the trade volume between China and the United States exceeded 680 billion US dollars last year. The broad common interests and broad cooperation space between China and the United States are clear, but the "decoupling and chain breaking" is a painful blow, and the trade war and tariff war are even more damaging to oneself. As early as 2019, China was the first in the world to officially classify and regulate fentanyl based substances. The progress made in drug control cooperation between China and the United States in recent years is evident. Using fentanyl as an excuse to wield the "tariff stick" will only backfire.

Xie Feng said that in the face of constantly emerging global challenges and hot issues, China and the United States, as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, should shoulder the responsibilities and obligations of major powers, maintain peace, promote development, advocate cooperation, and say no to bullying, unilateralism, and protectionism.

The Duke North Carolina China Leadership Summit is jointly organized by student organizations from Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with over 150 attendees from the education, business, and strategic sectors of both countries.
