People's Daily Beijing, February 4th (Reporter Zhou Yu) - President of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, Orsi, arrived in Beijing on February 1st to begin a seven day state visit to China. On February 4th, President Orsi led a delegation to visit Beijing Foreign Studies University, where a "Tree of Friendship" planted by former Uruguayan President Mujica 13 years ago stood on campus, becoming a vivid witness to the friendship between the two countries.
During his speech on site, Orsi stated that this visit is not only fulfilling the national agenda, but also an invitation from Chinese students and alumni, demonstrating the deep connection between the people of Ukraine and China and the government. He praised China's important position on the international stage, highly recognized the pioneering ideas of jointly building the "the Belt and Road" initiative and the "community with a shared future for mankind", and believed that China interacted with the world with a unique way of getting along, and its development practice provided important enlightenment for all countries.
Orsi pointed out that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and China 38 years ago, the relationship between the two countries has maintained steady development. All Uruguayan presidents, regardless of their party affiliation, have been committed to deepening cooperation with China. Visits are not just a formality, but a sincere interaction based on mutual respect and common development. He recalled the past 13 years when former President Mujica planted the Tree of Friendship at Beijing Foreign Studies University, emphasizing that this spruce has become a symbol of friendship between Ukraine and China, and the growth of bilateral relations is like the growth of trees, requiring long-term cultivation and care.
In terms of cultural and educational exchange, Orsi emphasizes that the core of language learning is communication and mutual learning, rather than mechanical application. He stated that as an agricultural country, Uruguay deeply recognizes that education, technology, and innovation are the core driving forces of development, and cultural exchanges and academic dialogue between Uruguay and China are important bridges for enhancing understanding.
Orsi called on the two countries to continue to promote all-round cooperation with an open attitude, jointly address global challenges, and achieve common development through knowledge sharing and mutual learning of civilizations. At the same time, he emphasized that Uruguay will always adhere to opening up to the outside world, cherish its close ties with China, not only value the economic and livelihood benefits brought by cooperation, but also attach more importance to learning and drawing on Chinese civilization.
