It is reported that the US military plans to deploy the Typhon medium-range missile system at Kanoya Air Base in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan from June to September for joint US-Japan military drills. Upon the conclusion of the drills, the system will be relocated to US military bases stationed in Japan.
Guo Jiakun, Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, stated at a regular press conference on the 22nd that China firmly opposes the deployment of US medium-range missile systems in Asian countries, and urges the United States and Japan to reverse their wrong moves.
"China firmly opposes such deployment and has repeatedly voiced concerns over relevant issues," Guo Jiakun noted. The Typhon system is a strategic offensive weapon that undermines the legitimate security interests of other countries, endangers regional strategic security, heightens risks of military confrontation and arms race, and brings nothing but harms to regional peace and stability. For a long time, people across many Asian countries including Japan have kept voicing opposition.
"China urges the US and Japan to heed calls from regional nations, correct erroneous practices, and take concrete actions to contribute positively to regional peace and stability," he added.
"This move serves as another evidence of Japan's accelerating remilitarization," said Guo Jiakun. Multiple signs indicate that right-wing forces in Japan are seeking an overall overhaul of its military capabilities to prepare for so-called prolonged warfare. Essentially, such acts hollow out constraints imposed by Japan's constitution, international law and domestic regulations, challenge the post-war international order, and run counter to Japan's self-proclaimed identity as a peace-loving nation.
"The rising new militarism in Japan poses grave hazards and risks plunging the region into turmoil once again. The international community must draw lessons from history, stay highly vigilant and jointly curb such tendencies," Guo Jiakun emphasized.
