On the local time of the 26th, Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, answered media questions on-site after chairing the UN Security Council High-Level Meeting on "Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the International System Centered on the United Nations".
When asked about China’s views and suggestions on promoting a resolution to the current deadlock in the Iran situation, Wang Yi stated that China has been working to resolve the ongoing conflict. President Xi Jinping has put forward four-point proposals, charting the course for safeguarding and promoting peace in the Middle East. We maintain communication and coordination with major parties directly involved, as well as key regional and international partners. We believe that the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of all regional countries must be respected; civilians and non-military targets must be protected; the security of shipping lanes and energy infrastructure must be safeguarded; and the provisions of the nuclear non-proliferation regime must be upheld.
The key to the current situation lies in U.S.-Iran negotiations. We support the active mediation by countries including Pakistan, as well as the efforts made by the United States and Iran respectively. As the saying goes, "Rome was not built in a day," and resolving long-standing grievances cannot be achieved overnight. Yet every step forward in negotiations brings greater hope for peace; an earlier end to the conflict means fewer civilian casualties. We urge the parties concerned to firmly commit to a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, continue to meet each other halfway, and restore peace to the Middle East at an early date.
