The 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council is underway in Geneva, Switzerland. Li Xiaomei, Deputy Head of the Chinese Delegation, elaborated on China’s position at the session on the 16th.
Li Xiaomei stated that global human rights governance is currently confronted with challenges. On the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Human Rights Council, it is imperative to advocate respect for each country’s independently chosen path of human rights development, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) should play a constructive role. China recently released its fifth National Human Rights Action Plan, injecting stability and certainty into the development of the global human rights cause through its own progress in human rights. Xinjiang and Xizang are now enjoying prosperity and stability, and the legitimate rights and interests of residents in Hong Kong are fully safeguarded. The Law of the People’s Republic of China on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress is designed to protect the equal rights of all ethnic groups and advance their common development and prosperity.
Li Xiaomei refuted the false remarks made by a small number of countries including the United Kingdom, Australia and the Czech Republic, pointing out that these countries have appalling human rights records yet refuse to conduct self-reflection. China urges such a handful of countries to stop politicizing and instrumentalizing human rights, and uphold the credibility of multilateral human rights mechanisms through concrete actions.
