2021 Shanghai Cooperation Organization International Investment and Trade Expo and Qingdao Forum will be held

At the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Leung Chun-ying said that after years of development, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has become a comprehensive regional organization with the largest area and population in the world, with such advantageous conditions as rich resource endowment, huge market scale and strong scientific and technological innovation strength. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the SCO member states have carried forward the "Shanghai Spirit" and joined hands to fight the epidemic with mutual assistance in times of adversity, injecting positive energy into the steady development of the Organization and international cooperation in fighting the epidemic. The Expo and the Qingdao Forum on Local Economic and Trade Cooperation demonstrate the attraction, cohesion and vitality of the construction of demonstration zones for local economic and trade cooperation of the SCO member states, and fully demonstrate the enthusiasm and commitment of the business communities of the SCO member states in promoting local economic and trade cooperation and the building of an open world economy. We will continue to synergize the "One Belt And One Road" initiative with other countries' development strategies and regional cooperation initiatives such as the Eurasian Economic Union, so as to unblock regional economic cycles and accelerate economic recovery.

Zhang Shaogang, Vice Chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), China Chamber of International Commerce (CICC) and Chairman of the SCO China Business Council, pointed out that the SCO has stood the test of time and become an important constructive force in the Eurasian region and international affairs. In particular, since the outbreak of COVID-19, the SCO member states have strengthened cooperation in political, security, economic, trade and cultural fields, supported each other in the fight against the epidemic, set a successful example of international anti-epidemic and multilateral cooperation, and contributed to regional security, stability, development and prosperity. "We are ready to take the opportunity of the 20th anniversary of the SCO this year and work with other member states and the SCO Secretariat to comprehensively deepen cooperation in all areas of the SCO, jointly open up new prospects for the SCO's development and bring benefits to the people of countries in the region."

According to SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov, the establishment of the SCO Demonstration Zone will lay a solid foundation for bilateral investment and innovation, promote industrial development and expand mutually beneficial trade among SCO member states. The key to the success of the SCO Demonstration Zone is to create favorable conditions for the further development of SCO member states, to align with the "One Belt And One Road" initiative, and to turn the SCO into a more important platform for multilateral and bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation.

Liu Jiayi, secretary of the CPC Shandong Provincial Committee and director of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said that Shandong Province has accelerated the construction of the Shanghai Cooperation Demonstration Zone, focused on deepening economic and trade cooperation, promoting connectivity, strengthening cultural and people-to-people exchanges, building platform carrier and promoting the opening up to the outside world to achieve new results. The purpose of this meeting is to promote in-depth opening-up and cooperation among the SCO and the "One Belt And One Road" countries and regions, and to build a new system of open economy at a higher level.

The opening ceremony also held the unveiling ceremony of the Liaison Office of the SCO China Business Council and the Mechanism Liaison Office of the Joint Conference of Former Business Diplomats of the Ministry of Commerce.

The meeting also introduced the situation of the Shanghai Cooperation Demonstration Zone. Participants exchanged views on the theme of "Strengthening multilateral, bilateral and local economic and trade cooperation and promoting opening-up at a higher level under the new international situation". The meeting also released the "Qingdao Initiative" on strengthening local economic and trade cooperation. According to the initiative, since its establishment, the SCO member states have maintained close communication and in-depth cooperation, and achieved remarkable progress in counter-terrorism, security, economic development and people-to-people exchanges. The initiative calls on the SCO, as the world's most populous regional cooperation organization, to uphold the banner of the Shanghai Spirit, deepen sub-national economic and trade cooperation, open international logistics channels, promote investment and trade facilitation, and make contributions to sub-national cooperation and development of the SCO. The Initiative stresses that the year 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the SCO and will usher in a new era of multilateral and bilateral cooperation and development. The SCO will adhere to the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits and work together to achieve greater economic development in the region.

On the afternoon of the same day, Qingdao Forum held a panel discussion on the role and opportunities of cities and industrial parks in the SCO regional economic and trade cooperation, business model innovation of the SCO regional economic and trade cooperation in the post-epidemic era, opportunities and challenges brought by the integrated development of RCEP and the SCO.
