Cuban Foreign Minister thanks 136 countries for supporting the UN General Assembly discussion on ending the US embargo against Cuba.

Cuban Foreign Minister Rodríguez issued a statement on social media on August 8, thanking 136 countries for their support at the UN General Assembly plenary session on August 7 in debating the issue of ending the US economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba.

The statement said that Cuba sincerely thanks the representatives of member states who spoke at the General Assembly for condemning the serious humanitarian consequences of the US measures against Cuba. Against the backdrop of unprecedented pressure from the US, these countries' firm stance on peace, multilateralism, and the UN and international law is of great significance.

Rodriguez reiterated in the statement: "Cuba is not a threat. The real threat is the embargo."

The UN General Assembly held a plenary session on August 7 to debate the issue of ending the US economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba. At the beginning of the meeting, the US representative spoke on the meeting procedures, discrediting the Cuban government and opposing the General Assembly's continued debate on this issue, demanding a vote on whether to continue the day's agenda. However, the General Assembly subsequently decided to continue the debate with 136 votes in favor, 9 against, and 30 abstentions.

Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the US government adopted a hostile policy towards Cuba. In 1962, the US imposed an economic, financial, and trade embargo on Cuba. Since 1992, the UN General Assembly has annually reviewed draft resolutions submitted by Cuba demanding the lifting of the US embargo, and these resolutions have received overwhelming support for many years.
